Exceptionally rare original CDV of Black Bart circulated by Wells, Fargo out of Sacramento. On the reverse is "Black Bart for F. Tracy" who was the Sacramento WF agent identified on the obverse. Some historians maintain the obverse name is a printed version of one of his signatures, but this is impossible to prove, since Black Bart could change his handwriting to fool even the best of the experts. For a more thorough story on Black Bart, please see our story with the four page "wanted" circular in this sale. Attendant to this original Black Bart piece is a real photo post card, circa 1918 "Milton and Angel's stage coach held up by Black Bart"; attended by two black and white repro photos of Black Bart: and white 5 x 3 1/2 inch portrait, stamped on the reverse: "Wells Fargo & Co.'s Express Received 63"; a 4 x 8 glossy black and white; A 5 x 7 glossy black and white portrait. The autograph "Charles E. Boles", on a narrow, closely-cut slip of paper, was removed from a September, 1864 receipt of military stores roll of Company B, 116th Illinois Infantry, signed by Boles as First Sergeant, witnessing the signatures of the other soldiers. This may be the only known pairing of an actual Boles signature with his original photo. As such, it is an exceptional pair from the West's most notorious outlaw stage robber.
