Wells, Fargo & Co. Exchange Note, Cert. no. 28841 issued to Anthony Parker(?) for $25 on Jul 14, 1855. Signed by Wells Fargo Co., New York. Signed on reverse, black print on blue paper by Baker & Diajckinek, New York. Rubber stamp in red ink titled "Twenty Five Dollars", "No. 28841". A very early 1855 note from Stockton, which served as supply and transportation center to mines of the Southern Motherload Region. Stockton was founded in 1849 by German immigrant, Charles M. Weber, who had acquired over 48,000 acres through a Mexican land grant. Captain Weber tried gold mining but realized opportunities lay in providing for gold seekers from all over the world. The city was officially named after Commodore Robert F. Stockton, a naval officer who was responsible for driving the Mexican forces out of California in the 1840ís. It became the first city in California to receive a name that was not Spanish or Native American. The City of Stockton was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850.
Although the gold rush ended by 1855, Stockton businesses prospered from their ability to process and transport agricultural products to the markets of the world. [Ref: visitstockton.org]
