Framed, 14.5" x 11.5" WF receipt dated 1893 going to Central Valley, California. Also included are two covers, both stamped, and one addressed to G. W. McNear, San Francisco, Cal. It is not clear whether the cover is addressed to the father or to the son by the same name who took over the business in 1888. Grain Merchant George Washington McNear came from a line of sea-going men; at 15, he went to sea. In 1856, at age 19, he became a part owner and the master of a steamboat which he managed successfully until 1860. He arrived in San Francisco on August 2, 1860. He joined his brother in Petaluma. In 1861, George W. McNear and his brother opened a branch in San Francisco.
