Rare letterhead with interesting content. Cover has Treasure City cancel. Wells Fargo & Co. Stage Department, Virginia City, Nevada, Feb, 5th, 1869. Addressed to CC Cassidy in Dutch Flat ("Dear Brother") from GW Cassidy. Says his newspaper, The Daily Safeguard of Virginia City has been sold. He, along with the editor in chief of the paper (John I. Ginn) are headed for White Pine to set up a new business. He sent the letter from Treasure Hill as the attached cover indicates. Formerly the Trespass (started Feb. 6,1867), which was suspended Oct. 3, 1868, with the Nevada Democratic Printing Co. purchasing it for $8000 and launching the Daily Safeguard two days later. It was a strong advocate for the Democratic party during the elections but lasted only three months after the campaigns. George Williams Cassidy was involved in journalism and newspaper publications in Dutch Flat, Meadow Lake, Virginia City, Hamilton, & Eureka. More background info. included.
