Framed "Free of Charge" card from 1899 signed by John Joseph Valentine, Sr. an American expressman. He was the first president of Wells Fargo & Company who had not been a banker and served from 1892 until his death in 1901. The card is made to William Henry Hurlbert an American journalist and author of “The Diary of a Public Man,” (actually a memoir) published in the North American Review in 1879. He became editor of the New York World in 1876. Hurlbert’s rambunctious prose was a key reason for the World’s success. Also included are two WF Express labels. (Prag Collection)
