Handwritten correspondence dated June 24, 1873 from the Wells Fargo Agent in Downieville, California to John J. Valentine, general superintendent of Wells Fargo in San Francisco. The agent asks Valentine if he should send a Wells Fargo Messenger with the treasure (gold) shipment from the Sierra Buttes Mine in Sierra County. Valentine responded to have "a good man go with the large shipments." Valentine signed the letter, adding his official status as Superintendent underneath. The letter also carries his personal office receipt stamp of "Received June 27, 1873, J . J. V." at top center. Valentine worked for the company for more than 30 years, starting as a delivery agent, being Superintendent for many years, then president (the first non banker to be Wells Fargo President. 5 x 8 inches.
