Wells, Fargo Express Way Bill Receipt Book, 1889, Carson City, 16 x 19", binding shot, original covers present. E. F. Pierce, Agent at Carson. Jan. 1 to Aug. 20, 1889.

This is perhaps one of the most fascinating receipt books I've seen in fifty years. As the Carson City Wells Fargo office in 1889, it could - and does - contain shipments of almost everything imaginable. As the central shipping place involving the Comstock mines, the Carson City Mint, and providing shipments to all of the mining camps accessed by the Carson & Colorado Railroad, this book has it all. On page three, the top entry states "4 Brs Bn", Hale and Norcross Mng Co." It doesn't take too much thinking to realize our agent Pierce means four bars of bullion though I've never seen those abbreviations before (fh). Another entry "bl, Goldberg Bowen & Co." is for a barrel of whiskey from San Francisco wholesale whiskey merchants Goldberg, Bowen. Tong Hang sent or received coin to a relative in San Francisco. The Agency Nevada Bank sent bags of coin to the Carson Mint. It goes on and on, a truly remarkable record. The pages are not enumerated, but must approach or exceed 200.
