Rare certificate with only a few known. #4227 for 50 shares to WG Crandall trustee. Datelined San Francisco 1876. Signed by secretary K Bogart(?) and president D McDonald. Incorporated Jan. 28, 1987. Location of mines in "Virginia Dist., Storey Co., Nev." To make this even better, the printer was none other than San Francisco's African American G. T. Brown. The printer of this piece was Grafton Taylor Brown. Brown was one of the first African American lithographers in the American West during the mid to late 19th Century. He was one of the first to illustrate views of California and the Pacific Coast. He also created to 2 earliest bird's eye views of Virginia City. By the time he was 26, Brown owned his own firm located in San Francisco. The Wells Fargo Mining Co. stock is one of Brown's best known and most famous stocks. The stock features a lovely and detail design on stagecoach in the center. The original art concept for stock was designed and printed by anonymous printer in San Francisco. But in 1876, Brown was contracted into producing five thousand copies of the stock. Although he produced more, Brown added his own touch to the piece. He included more detail and artistic design presented in earlier copies like the vignette is large and would do anyone proud. A large stage with "W. F,. mining Co." on the wagon. . [REF: Robert Chandler, San Francisco Lithographer African Americana Artist Grafton Taylor Brown. 2014] The Wells Fargo Mine was one of the many small mines at the Comstock Lode. Although the mine seems closely connected to Wells Fargo, in actuality, the mine was in no way connected to the famous Wells Fargo and merely traded on its good name.
