Wells Fargo Pony Express Stamp, 25 cents for 1/2 ounce, cancelled in Virginia City, Nevada TERRITORY, in March of 1861. Red ink on buff paper, center image of a Pony Express rider facing left, with // PONY EXPRESS // at the top, // 25 CTS 1/2 OZ. // within the shield below the rider, and // ENCLOSED IN OUR FRANKS / WELLS, FARGO & CO. // below the shield. Despite the US Post Office being granted a government-sanctioned monopoly on mail handling, private carriers in the American West broke the law with their own private mail delivery services. After strong protests from California residents, Congress consented to allow private mail delivery as long as the Post Office got paid -- even if it wasn't physically carrying the mail! Wells Fargo purchased thousands of envelopes from the Post Office and printed their own distinctive Wells Fargo frank on them. They soon carried most of the mail to the American West. In August of 1862, Wells Fargo inaugurated its own version of the by-then defunct Pony Express. Their version, often called the Virginia City Pony Express, connected Nevada Territory mining towns with commercial centers in Sacramento and San Francisco. At first, they sold a brown 10¢ Pony Express stamp for every half-ounce, AND an appropriate US Post Office stamp to match their current rate. The rate was raised to 25¢ in February 1863 with a blue adhesive stamp. This was replaced by a red adhesive stamp (like this one) in March of 1864. The Virginia City Pony Express was permanently discontinued on March 2, 1865. This stamp shows a March cancellation in Virginia City, so it is most likely to have been March of 1864. Nevada became a state in October of 1864. [sources: www.rfrajola.com and www.mysticstamp.com.]
