Sacramento, December 6th, 1881 J. B. Hume Special Officer for Wells, Fargo & Company issued this $1,800 Reward! poster for the three masked men who remained missing after the November 7th, 1881 robbery of the stage from Sonora, in Tuolumne County, to Milton, in Calaveras County. This is the very same area that notorious Black Bart operated in the mid 1870s. Jim Crumm was captured but the three at large were: Billy Minor: alias Billy Anderson (had been sent to State Prison in 1871 for stage robbery in company with "Alkali Jim") ; William Miller: alias Barnes (had been sent to prison 1871, discharged 1874) fond of playing poker, whisky and fast women; and Jim Brown. 8 x 10 inches; two spots in lower third. 8 x 10" Billy Minor (also spelled Miner) was born Ezra Allen Miner in 1847 in Kentucky. He later changed his first name to William. Miner is unquestionably one of the most famous of the western stage robbers. He is credited with creating the phrase "hands up!", and was also known as "the gentleman bandit" or "gentleman robber". His other name was the "Grey Fox," of which a Hollywood movie was later made of his train robbing years in Canada starring Richard Farnsworth. California
