San Francisco, March 24th, 1875, General Superintendent John J. Valentine issued a $3,000 Reward for the recovery of gold bars and dust stolen from the Express Box from Sonora and Columbia to Milton. 7 1/2 x 10 inches; slight pieces missing from the left and right edges. This is a stage robbery along a highly traveled route between major gold producing towns of Sonora and Columbia. The robbery took place near Reynold's Ferry Hill when 3 masked men armed with two pistols and a Henry rifle. Interestingly, the road must have been rough, since the passengers were all walking behind the stage when robbed. L. Miller was the driver. The box was thrown to the bandits, who opened it with a sledge hammer, removing $6,000 and giving the box filled with papers and mail back to the driver. (Stockton daily Evening Herald, 3/214/75)
