One stock cert issued by West Wind Mining Company of Aurora, Mono County, California dated 1863. Cert #6, 50 shares @$250 each, signed by Secretary William Feast and President L Vautua (sp?). Printed by Agnew and Deffebach/San Francisco. 25c Warehouse Recp't Revenue Stamp. Not cancelled. Vignette of eagle feeding young. Note: Aurora - now a ghost town - is one of Nevada's legendary 19th century mining settlements, even attracting aspiring prospector Samuel Clemens who eventually turned to writing under the pseudonym Mark Twain. Aurora sprang to life in 1863 with the discovery of the Wild West Vein, going on to yield $27 million in gold for the next year or two until the town was essentially shuttered in 1870. Aurora was the county seat of both Mono County, CA and Esmeralda County, NV in its heyday and eventually was officially declared a Nevada townsite in a future resurveying. Additional Note: Cory & Hicks staked the first claims in the Aurora Mining District on Silver Hill on August 24, 1860. The first shipment of ore was made on November 10, 1860. Shortly thereafter the Esmeralda Mining Company and the Consolidated Silver Hill Mining companies were formed and incorporated. William Feast was in Aurora by 1861. He owned a cabin on the northeast corner of Silver & Del Monte. He was the Mono County Treasurer and continued in this capacity after Aurora was proven to be in Nevada. Feast was the secretary of the West Wind, Fairy Queen, Utah, Gibraltar etc. He died in Aurora in 1864. (Additional Note from Prag Collection.)
