Apache woven olla (water basket) covered in pine pitch. Nicely shaped and covered with pitch to make the closely woven basketry watertight. These baskets, and their efficacy, were extremely important to the peoples traveling long stretches of almost waterless desert, often on horseback. Braided horsehair handles attached for hanging. Great piece! State: Arizona/New Mexico City: Date: c. late 1800's FHWAC#: 43609
