Cert. #101 issued for 1000 shares. Russell Springs, Kansas on the masthead. Large size certificate in very fine condition. This describer has never seen a Kansas mining stock issued pre-1900, so it's rare. Nice mining vignette. Cobalt mining is not currently a significant activity in Kansas. The state does not have known large-scale cobalt deposits or mining operations. In the U.S., cobalt is often produced as a byproduct of nickel and copper mining. The discovery of a vein of nickel a few miles sw of Russell Springs in the summer of 1888 generated considerable excitement. Within a few weeks, more than 60 claims had been taken in the rocky portions of the county. This began the quarrying industry of lime and sandstone which contributed to the county economy (legendsofkansas.com). VF. Uncanceled.
