Rare. $1,000 uncancelled bond issued in 1903. Signed by the vice president and assistant secretary. Brown border with great locomotive vignette. Western Bank Note Co., Chicago. One full sheet of coupons, plus partial. 14 x 9.5" The Western Pacific Railway was incorporated in 1903 to compete with Southern Pacific. Under the direction of George Jay Gould I, they proposed to build a standard gauge track connection to the Pacific Coast for his aspiring Gould transcontinental system. Construction was financed by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.
