Illustrated by NC Wyeth. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 419pp. Red hardcover. 7.5 x 5.25" A nice copy with some wear to covers and light age discoloration. Whispering Smith is an American Western novel written by Frank H. Spearman and first published in 1906. It tells the story of Gordon "Whispering" Smith, a legendary railroad detective loosely based on real-life Union Pacific agent James L. "Whispering" Smith. The novel follows Smith's efforts to bring law and order to the frontier, mixing themes of railroading, justice, loyalty, and romance. It was immensely popular in its day and helped establish the railroad detective as a heroic figure in Western literature. The book inspired numerous adaptations, including several silent films, a 1948 movie starring Alan Ladd, and a 1961 NBC television series.
