Dateline White Pine, Colo., April 3, 1926. Addressed to Akron Mines, please deduct Clarence's store bill at A.M. Woodworth's from wages due him in the amount of $5. Measures 5.25 x 8.25" Folds, some toning/soiling. White Pine, Colorado sprang up as a mining camp in Gunnison County in 1879/80. The town struggled in the mid and late 1880s due to its remote location and the falling price of silver. When the Silver Panic of 1893 hit, White Pine became a ghost town. In 1902, the Akron Mining Company bought most of the mines. They drove the Akron Tunnel 4,000 feet into Lake Hill and exploited rich veins of coal and zinc. During World War I, the company took out a million dollars of ore. In 1930, the Callahan Lead-Zinc Company bought out Akron. Date: 1926 Location: White Pine, Colorado HWAC# 60438
