Whitney-Howard lever-action hammer-less breech-loading single shot rifle circa 1866-1870. Less than 1,700 were produced. 44 caliber rimfire. Black walnut varnished stock and blued frame and barrel. A rare and historic rifle made for the new ,"Henry 44 Rimfire cartridge " invented by B. Tyler Henry in 1860 for the Henry Rifle. Although the new "cartridge" was a vast improvement over percussion firearms of the period, the Henry rifle, with 16 repeating 44 caliber cartridges, far outclassed the single shot Whitney Howard. A truly rare and unique piece of American gun making.
