This is an Eli Whitney (Jr.) model 1841 "Mississippi" pattern musket, .58 cal. The barrel is 33 in. long and marked "V over P" on the left flat at the breach, also the letter "C" and "B STEEL" in caps. The stock has a faint rectangle inspector's carouche visible behind the sideplate. All brass hardware (two barrel bands, buttplate, side-plate, trigger guard, and patchbox) appear to be original to the gun. The buttplate is stamped "US" on the heel, and the sideplate is stamped with the letter "H" by a sub-inspector. The trigger guard has a letter "C" stamped far back on the plate (Casey). The ramrod is present with the tulip brass finale. The barrel is heavily patinated and there is no visible rifling present, many 1841 pattern rifles were pulled from arsenals and converted to .58 cal. in preparation for the war between the states. The lock-plate is marked "N HAVEN 1853" and "E. WHITNEY US". Eli Whitney was one of the original 19 firearms contractors to the United States as early as 1798. This one is not fitted for a bayonet and the rear sight is missing. Overall condition is good with 160 years of handling wear. Please see photos for details. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California, or Hawaii. No attempt has been made to fire this firearm. Firing of an antique firearm would be inconsistent with the value of the firearm. Additional shipping and handling may apply.
