An 1860 letter written by a member of the Wide Awake pro-Republican youth movement to a friend describing his experiences at the 1860 Republican National Convention, along with the embossed patriotic letter it was sent in. The Wide Awakes were an organization of young men in Northern states advocating pro-Republican political participation which would grow into a paramilitary force in its later years. The writer of the letter, a young man by the name of J.C. Leylor Artiste, describes the mass gathering of Wide Awakes en route to the convention and the speech given by William H. Seward, which he attended. The envelope containing the letter is embossed with text promoting Lincoln's presidential campaign. Also included with the letter is a more legible handwritten transcription. [ Ionia Michigan
