This is a loan document signed by William Ellery, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, as well as The Articles of Confederation in 1777. Ellery was an attorney and the representative to the Second Continental Congress from Rhode Island. When the new Federal government was instituted in 1789, President George Washington named William as the Collector of Customs for the Newport District. Ellery held this post through many administrations until his death in 1820.
The loan was made to Rhode Island farmer, Daniel Wilbur, whose name is written on the document in what appears to be Ellery's handwriting.
Document is very readable. These are getting scarcer and scarcer. A real piece of America's history.
To add to the subject, there are also four (4) magazine illustrations of Revolutionary War icons, including George Washington (2), Patrick Henry and Alexander Hamilton.
