William Morris was the lawyer for many of the largest mines on the Comstock. Most people don't know this, but Nevada, in 1863, voted on a new state constitution. It was defeated because the influential mining magnates thought mining should get a better deal. And who was their outspoken advocate - Stewart. He argued mining cases on both sides of the one lode vs. multiple lodes. When he lost one case, he made it his mission to ruin that judge's credibility. He was a United States Senator during the Civil War and years later again during reconstruction. It is said he made and lost three fortunes! A very important signature from a very important Nevada that is hard to find.
