This is a rare handwritten letter from the movies' first cowboy star William S. Hart (1864-1946). The letter, written on Hart's Horseshoe Ranch letterhead stationery, is barely readable, possibly because it was written in Hart's later years. Hart started as a New York stage actor performing Shakespeare, but came to Hollywood. During his years in Hollywood, he befriended Old West lawman Wyatt Earp, serving as a pallbearer, along with fellow western star Tom Mix, when Earp died in 1929. Hart willed his ranch to the city of Los Angeles, and it was turned into a park, with house tours, picnic grounds and a horse retirement facility. He retired from acting in 1925 after a scandal surfaced involving his ex-wife. This is a rare piece from a pioneer in the history of movies. Please see photos for more detail and condition.
