Spectacular carved Leekya-rock (turquoise) eagle with ivory fish in talons. Silver chain connecting wings and body with silver overlay at top of wings with stamped patterns in silver, three red coral beads on each side. Frank Lewton's tag reads : "Willy Rosa/ hand carved eagle fetish/ purchased Tucson/ eagle/1935." 160g net. I found no info on Willy Rosa, but it was well known that Leekya sold or allowed other carvers access to his family owned turquoise mine, commonly known as "Leekya rock." The details of carving on this eagle are magnificent, far better detail and intricate than the other Leekya stone carvings in this sale.
open wing span 8", overall height 4". This piece is so magnificent that it belongs in a museum where everyone can enjoy the wonderful and spectacular work of key Zuni carvers of the early 20th century. Frank Lewton Collection [] [] [] [] []
