No. 170B, issued for 1898 to Col. & Mrs. G.G. Green. Signed by William Banning. Background vignette of Catalina Island. Good between San Pedro, Port Los Angeles, Redondo, Newport and Catalina Island. Toning, heavy on reverse. Printed on cardstock. Santa Catalina Island owner George Shatto asked Captain William Banning to schedule one of his coastal steamers to make three weekly trips between Avalon and San Pedro to accommodate his vision of turning the island into a tourist destination. Banning’s Wilmington Transportation Company vessels Ferndale (Shatto); Hermosa, Eureka, Warrior and Falcon carried passengers between San Pedro and Avalon, and in 1892 the Banning brothers purchased the island for $128,740.
