Willian Banning was approached by George Shatto, owner of Santa Catalina Island, to have one of the steamships make three weekly trips to transport tourist to the island from San Pedro to Avalon Bay. In 1892 along with other investors the Banning's bought the island forming the Santa Catalina Island Co.
