Thirty B&W and 6 chromolith postcards of the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. Sarah Winchester was the widow of William Winchester, the firearm magnate. When he died of tuberculosis in in New Haven, Connecticut in 1881, Sarah moved to San Jose, California, in 1884, and she purchased an unfinished farmhouse. Thought by many to be extremely superstitious, she had the house continually enlarged, often with architectural peculiarities. This lot of 36 postcards show images of the interior and exterior of the now-famous, and supposedly haunted, Winchester Mystery House. There is one card which claims to be [one of] the only photographs of Mrs. Winchester in existence. Some cards have no divided back, putting them in the first half-decade of the 1900s.
