This is a Winchester model 1873 in .44 cal. or .44-40. This rifle, when introduced, was a major breakthrough with a center-fire actual rifle cartridge. Our rifle is S/N 32867 with a birthdate of 1879. It has a first model dust cover with one forward mounting screw and no serrations at the back. The rifle has a 24 in. "Sporting Model" round barrel with a full length magazine tube. The side-plates on the receiver as well as the entire gun has blue-gray finish with corners and edges bright from handling. The serial number is readily visible behind the loading lever, the "model 1873" stamping is clear on the tang, the Winchester address and patent dates are marked faintly on the barrel in two lines. The sights appear to be original to the gun. The bore is clean and bright without pitting. Our rifle sports a crescent steel butt-plate with the sliding door for a cleaning rod now missing. The brass lifter plate a mustard colored patination with no identification to caliber. The action is tight, the loading gate is tight, and the lever catch is also tight. Most screws appear to have never been moved and therefore look original and without slot damage. The stock has handling wear expected from the use of a 140 year old gun; and appears to have the original oil finish. The nose cap is patinated matching the rest of the gun. Only one minor scratch to the top of the barrel and left side plate. Overall length is 43 in. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Please see photo for details.
