This is a Winchester model 1876, with a third model dust cover, 28 in. octagon barrel chambered for .45-60. This is Winchester's answer to the Sharps rifle for hunting buffalo. Our gun has S/N 14871 where both "1s" look like hoof prints with a birthdate of January 1881. The full length 28 in. octagon barrel has some real heft to it with a full length magazine tube as well. The barrel wears the Winchester address on the top flat, marked "CAL 45-60" top flat at the breach, a teardrop copper front blade sight and a flip-up ladder sight marked out to 1000 yds. The bluing has taken a blue light plum appearance, and some spotting in places. The octagon barrel has lightly polished edges consistent with light wear, some very light patination due the high polish that Winchester put into this metal. It would be hard to rate the bluing but 70% seems reasonable with the barrel fairing better than the receiver. There are several scratches in the forestock along with an attempt to checker the forearm by hand at some point which is a negative for value. The buttstock wears a crescent buttplate with a clearing rod trapdoor, the rod now absent, the oil finish appears to be original. The action is tight, the lever catch is tight, the screws appear original without slot damage. The brass cartridge lifter is mustard colored engraved .45-60. A little surprise is the adjustable single trigger. The bore is bright without pitting. Overall length is 48.5 in. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Please see photo for details.
