This remarkable Winchester model 71 is a standard first year production S/N 68X. The model 71 in .348 cal. was made between 1936 and 1958 with some prototypes made in 1935. This beautiful gun has rarely if been fired and has all original bluing throughout with a scalloped metal butt-plate and unmarred original standard wood furniture. The .348 cal. was meant to replace several other Winchester calibers such as the .33 Winchester and the .405 Winchester among others. The model 71 was a new and improved Winchester model 1886 with a more refined bolt locking system which used a lever instead of a bolt to lock the chamber before firing. This could be considered the best model 1886 Winchester ever made. The .348 cal. round was an improved 50-110 express round in that it used a .50 cal. casing necked down to a .35 cal. projectile using smokeless powder instead of black powder. The pre-war model 71's are considered the premiere production of the 71's. This particular rifle is one of the earliest in the production line, made in 1936, and is in "as new" condition. For the collector: a very rare piece of Americana. For the shooter: an excellent light weight big game firearm.
