Large one man windlass possibly from the 1860's. It is 4 feet long, 7" diameter, with a single handle for cranking. The wood is full of large square nails as well as some round nails, showing use over many decades. This is a classic mine antique. These were the articles used at the top of a shallow shaft that allowed a prospector/miner to dig the shaft, progressing from a prospect pit to a shaft. As a one man windlass, it would have been most useful for shafts of fifty feet or less with a small ore bucket, because one guy can only hoist so much. From the Cave Mine, Beaver Co., Utah.
