Central City, Gilpin County. No. A90 for 500 shares to Ferdinand Ward, signed by Drake De Kay as secretary and Wm. F. Buckley as president. Dated Sept 13, 1881. Vignette of two US seated dollars. This mine rode on the tailfeathers of many of the great mines of Gilpin, and like other New York promotions, had a really attractive vignette. The company was promoted heavily in 1879 in the New York market, which in turn reached out to Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago markets, who all followed Wall Street down what they hoped was a golden path. The company sunk a shaft and developed three levels. The first ore was hoisted April 1, 1880 from this shaft. Within a month, the company was promoting a vein up to ten feet wide between the second and third levels, which tells me (fh) that it was a typical pinch and swell vein system making it difficult to define mineable tonnage. By 1883, the mine was among many that were overpromoted, with the stock going from $7 to $17 per share to one cent to $$1.40 "if anyone will buy the stock." Herzog Collection. rare. Condition problems, ragged bottom edge, staing. Central City Colorado United States of America
