For many years this was the sole $50, 1902 Date Back reported on the bank. Jerry Sheehan, the cashier was later president of The Farmers And Merchants National Bank Of Eureka, Nevada and was well connected to George Wingfield. Pen signature of Jerry Sheehan, cashier and too far faded for president. Condition: Very Good. Serial Number: 838. The First National Bank Of Winnemucca History: The third national bank that was chartered the State of Nevada was the The First National Bank Of Winnemucca on October 20, 1886 and was the only bank in the state to issue Series of 1882 notes which only one $10 Brown Back is reported. The banks cashier and later president and United States Senator was George S. Nixon. According to lore, a young George Wingfield came to then cashier Nixon for a loan and as they say the rest is history! These two were partners in banks and mines across the state and both became wealthy. After Nixon died in 1912 and Wingfield bought Nixon’s interests in the banks and mines from Nixon’s widow. An interesting fact is that in 1890, George S. Nixon was asking the government’s permission to move the bank “… to Sacramento, California…” but at the time it would have taken an Act of Congress to have been done! On September 19, 1900 “Butch Cassiedy and members of the “Wild Bunch” including Harry Longabaugh, “The Sundance Kid” successfully robbed the bank and took $33,000 from George S. Nixon at gun point. The bank was placed into receivership December 10, 1932 with a capital of $200,000. George Wingfield and all the other stock holders were liable under the law for another $200,000!
