Large, framed, oil on canvas painting of a woman washing alone in her room. The subject matter clearly takes after the famous 1663 piece by Jan Havickszoon Steen titled "Woman at her Toilet", with many similar details, including the small dog curled up on the bed. The signature on the bottom right corner of the painting appears to be "Ouret" or something similar; however, we were unable to identify the name to attribute this work to a specific artist, although we did find a reference to a painter named Andre Ouret online for the sale of a painting in 1999 at Declerck-Beghin. Unfortunately, we were unable to find any images of the artist's work to compare. We think this piece is worthy of further research, due to the skill of the artist and the appeal of the scene; we could not stop looking at it. At first glance the piece looked to us to be of Spanish or Latin American origin. The exact date of the work is unknown but the condition of the canvas and the mounting of the canvas on the wood by staples, indicates this is a modern piece. We found it to be reminiscent of a few well-known realism artists from 19th Century, including English painter, John Bagnold Burgess (1829-1897), Girolamo Induno (1825-1890), Joaquin Sorolla (1863-1923),
The painting is in excellent condition, solid wood frame, measures 20 x 24 or 32 x 27 with frame.
