C. / 1888 / (woman's portrait); white metal, 32 mm. The Woman's Relief Corps (WRC) was founded in 1883 as a women's auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. It was designed to assist the GAR provide relief to Union veterans. The GAR refused to allow women to join. The first presidents were E. Florence Barker, Kate Brownlee Sherwood and Sarah E. Fuller.
