Beautiful carved wooden horse, 42 inches tall, 62 inches long. Medium brown; mounted on wooden base with metal straps. We are told by a third party that this is a very early Armitage Herschell carved carousel horse made for use on a track machine. See https://carousels.org/Carvers_Builders3.html (from the Nat'l Carousel Assn). The giveaway is the separate saddle and also the wedge-shaped hind leg attachment. It dates from the late 1800s, made in N. Tonawanda, New York, where the factory is now a museum. This horse would have been part of a county fair style machine that was trucked from fair to fair, rather than being from a permanent roundabout with jumpers. Some of these horses were converted to the later jumping machines, but this one apparently is not (since there is no hole for the vertical pole). There may be scars on the horse's wooden belly from the iron plate used to mount it on a track machine.
