Stamped on the bottom "Animal Trap Co. of Miss., Inc." This was a significant player in the decoy manufacturing industry. Likely pre-1950. 16 x 5 x 7" Originally, the Animal Trap Company of North America focused on producing animal traps. In 1918 they expanded into making wooden hunting decoys. Their decoys were crafted using duplicating lathe machines, ensuring mass production with consistent quality. Pascagoula became known as the home of numerous carvers of decoys. Over the years Animal Trap Co. bought out most of the home-town competitors. The company produced various decoy models, including wooden and paper-mâché, and later plastic decoys. In about 1949 they ceased wooden decoy production, shifting focus to plastic models. The company eventually stopped manufacturing in the 1970s, largely due to the impact of Hurricane Agnes in 1972.
Many of the ATC decoys have only minimal paint, as does this one on which that original paint is still present. There are no holes in the bottom from an anchor eyelet, so this was most likely never taken on a duck hunt. With wooden decoy with the Animal Trap Co. stamp on the base we know it was made before 1950.
