A pair of souvenir postcards from the World's Columbian Exposition, which took place in Chicago from May 5 to Oct. 31, 1893, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. These lithographic prints of the Woman's Building & Administration Building are printed with the official seal, which is dated Aug. 14, 1889, & signatures of the exposition president & secretary. Series No. 1, Designs No. 1 & 2. Pub: American Lithographic Co., N.Y. Both unused.
The World's Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, covered 690 acres, featuring nearly 200 new but temporary buildings of predominantly neoclassical architecture, canals & lagoons, & people & cultures from 46 countries. More than 27 million people attended the exposition during its six-month run. The fair ended with the city in shock, as popular mayor Carter Harrison Sr. was assassinated by Patrick Eugene Prendergast two days before the fair's closing. Closing ceremonies were canceled in favor of a public memorial service. [Chicago Illinois
