This is a George Wostenholm & Son bowie Knife. It is marked "I*XL" on the ricossa and "G. Wostenholm & Son/ Washington Works/ Sheffield" indicating a 1848-1870's manufacture. It is 9 in. overall length with a 5 in. blade. The scales have an ornate scrolling guard and cap; the scales are a type of bone. A shield is present on the left side scale. Some light loss of material on the right scale. Some veritas from a life in the sheath. Overall good condition with original sheath. The Snap closure on the sheath is present but broken. This knife may have been imported into the USA in time for the Civil War. "GF" is carved into the leather. Please see photo for details. (ref. oldpocketknives.com/george-wostensholm-ixl.knives)
