Rare stock for a Native American settlement. Certificate number 214, issued to Thomas B. Eldridge for "one share of ten lots in the City of Wyandott, situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, in the Wyandott Purchase, Kansas Territory." Dateline Wyandott City, Kansas Territory, 1857. Signed by president Silas Armstrong and secretary Roberts. Pen cancelled. Black print on blue paper with Native American and dog vignettes. Printed by Kansas City Enterprise Print. Reverse is covered in pen notations about assessments and transfers. 5.25 x 8" Horizontal fold, light wear. Company president Silas Armstrong became Head Chief of the Wyandot Indian Nation in 1858, serving in that capacity until his death on December 14, 1865. In September 1865, Armstrong, accompanied by Matthew Mudeater, acted as a delegate from the Wyandot Nation at an Indian council called by the government at Fort Smith, Arkansas. According to the Kansas Historical Society: "Wyandott was initially established in the 1840s by Wyandot (Huron) Native Americans removing from Ohio. In 1855 the tribe gave up their tribal rights in exchange for U.S. citizenship and individual ownership of land. In late 1856 the Wyandott City Company was formed, composed of Wyandot members and other businessmen intent on organizing and developing the town. By the middle of 1858 residents petitioned to become an unincorporated town in the territory of Kansas. In 1859 the town was the site for the creation of the fourth and final constitution under which Kansas entered the Union as a state. In 1886, Wyandotte City, Armourdale, and Kansas City merged together to form the single city of Kansas City, Kansas."
