Yale 1888 Personal Photograph Album of Henry H. Haight, Jr. Henry Haight was the 10th Governor of California 1867-1871. He graduated from Yale in 1844. This album is from namesake son, who graduate from Yale in 1888. The Haight Family was prominent in San Francisco from the Gold Rush on. Haight Street and Haight Ashbury district named after him.The album is 14" x 9.5" x 4" thick with two brass clasps. It contains 96 cabinet cards of students, inclusive of 5 professors. None of the individuals are named. It also includes 18 large, mounted views, about 6 x 8" each. This group includes 6 exterior views at Yale University, one interior view, 4 pictures of unidentified male "clubs", one view of the Crew Building along the river, one view of a baseball game and five views of men's sports teams, including baseball and football. Additionally, there are four other views of Yale tucked into the book. The album does not contain a photograph of famous professors, Benjamin Silliman or his son of the same name. The baseball team photograph contains A.A. Stagg, their "Famous Pitcher" who was considered the finest baseball player to every play at Yale. Yale played approximately 17 games that season, winning most, including the championship. There is a strong possibility that the photo of the baseball field was taken during the championship game. Stagg chose not to play professional baseball, though they hounded him throughout his youth. After graduating he acted as a minister for the YMCA and later coached for a rival baseball team. Stagg also played football as an end at Yale University and was selected to the first All-America team in 1889. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach in the charter class of 1951 and was the only individual honored in both roles until the 1990s.
