A Captain's kit from the Yankee Schooner "Lee". This antique wood box measures 4.5 in. X 11 in. X 7.75 in. It is beautifully lacquered walnut with a hand painted scene of the schooner Lee slipping away under sail with the American flag proudly displayed. The crossed flags happen to display 13 stars symbolizing the 13 colonies of the time. The Lee was captained by Mr. John Manley an officer first in the Continental Navy and later the United States Navy, appointed by General George Washington in 1775. The box has period hinges but the locking mechanism is missing; remaining is the mother of pearl inlay accepting the key. The base is split in several places along wood grain, very typical of an antique of this age. This is a beautiful surviving piece from the Revolutionary War, possibly a keepsake made by one of the men on board. The Lee could out-run heavier British frigates and took one as a prize capturing much needed dry goods and gunpowder for the Continental Army. This pleased George (Washington) and very much displeased George 111 (the King of England). Condition is very good with a dry crack in the floor. City: State: Date:
