This is an incredible Randsburg piece. A Yellow Aster Mining & Milling Co. stock signed by all 3 founders (Burcham, Singleton, and Mooers) and issued to one of the founders, Frederic Mooers. No. 16, issued for 500 shares on November 23rd, 1897. Signed by John Singleton as president and R.L. Burcham (wife to founder Charles Burcham) as secretary. Patriotic eagle vignette, gold seal, ornate border. $1 documentary adhesive stamp at lower left. Stub still attached. Stamped cancelled. Folds and some toning around the edges. The Yellow Aster was the largest gold mine in Southern California history, producing over 2 million ounces of gold! The story of its discovery involves Burcham, Singleton, and Mooers. Mooers had scouted the area in the Rand Mountains in 1894 and found only trace amounts of gold. He returned a year later with a new partner, John Singleton, and Charles Burcham, a Summit Dry Diggings citizen who had the necessary wagon and horses. They returned to Rand Mountain and Singleton broke off a piece of the red-stained quartz to find it rich in gold. The three knew they had to keep their findings a secret until they had enough time to secure legal rights to the claim, and decided to fool the other miners in the area by loading their wagon with sacks of worthless quartz. The whole trip had been financed by Burcham's wife, Dr. Rose La Monte, who warned her husband about not cashing out until the true value of the claim could be determined. This advice saved the three a fortune, as they turned down an offer of $500,000 for a property that went on the produce over $12,000,000 in gold. Rose decided to move to the camp and served as the company's secretary, book keeper, and an important member of the decision-making team. The Yellow Aster stakes were set April 25, 1895 and the Rand District was created by the end of the year on December 20, 1895. Date: 1897 Location: Randsburg, California HWAC# 572012
