The Yellow Jacket Silver Mining Company - Gold Hill Mining District, Nevada Territory - Stock certificate #85 datelined Gold Hill, N.T. July 29th, 1863, for 5 shares made out to Jeth Cook. Uncancelled. Incorporated February 17th, 1863, and capitalized at $1,200,000; 1200 shares at $1000 per share; 'one share to the foot'. The price per share is unusually high perhaps focusing on the more well to do capitalist. Seth Cook was a well-known Mining Superintendent of the Sierra Nevada Mine (ref.: Overland Monthly - Reminiscences of Early Virginia City -Part II, Jan. - June 1915 Vol. LXV p.544). Signed by President B. F. Sherwood and Secretary James Hyatt. Sherwood had been connected with the house of Stout & Dickinson, bankers, and brokers, in New York City before arriving in California. He opened an office as a broker in Virginia City in 1867, remaining but a year, and returned to San Francisco again entering the Board. As a broker he early obtained the friendship and confidence of a number of the large operators, and in Virginia City and San Francisco was known William Sharon's broker and therefore followed carefully by Comstock speculators. (ref.: The History of the San Francisco Stock and Exchange Board by Joseph L. King. 1910, p. 134-6). After being connected with the Bank Ring, Sharon and Ralston, Sherwood crossed over to the other side with the Bonanza Kings and was elected as a trustee of the Con-Virginia in 1872. 'Later on, Sherwood was superintendent or business manager of the Central, which subsequently, as a part of the Consolidated Virginia, yielded an enormous output of the precious metals."See same reference above: Overland Monthly). Vignette of an allegorical man seated on a horse. A brown 25-cent Internal Revenue Power of Attorney stamp attached. Embossed company stamp. Black on white; 5.25 x 9.75 inches, Lith by Britton & Co., San Francisco. Very Fine.
