Bank of California, Virginia City, Nevada, June 1, 1871. Issued to H.F. Rice for $433.41. Signed by Henry Yerington. Two cent IR adhesive revenue. Cut cancel. Remainder on reverse (from being glued in a ledger?). Both names on this check are significant. Yerington is a name very familiar to Nevada collectors. He was heavily involved with the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, as well as the Carson & Colorado Railroad. Henry F. Rice started as a Wells Fargo agent in Carson City before becoming the second superintendent of the Carson City Mint in 1870. He served in that capacity until he resigned in 1873. While superintendent, coin production increased and the dime was added to the roster of coins minted. After leaving the Mint, he returned to Wells Fargo and opened a brokerage business that succumbed to the panic of 1877. While being treated at an asylum in Stockton that year, Rice committed suicide.
