Very early California Gold Rush certificate. Inc. April, 1852. No. 155, issued for one share to Pleasant Routon on May 15th, 1852. Signed by Richard Savage as President and John Chapman as Secretary. Not cancelled. Black print on blue paper. The certificate is printed on one fourth of a sheet measuring 10 x 16 ¾ inches in the form of a four-page letter sheet. Writing below the certificate which is roughly 5" x 8 ½" documents the transfer of the cert. to BF Pine on July 20, 1852. Transferred two more times in 1852. On the inside (back of certificate) is another record of transfer to Joseph Gardiner November 5th, 1853. On back of the last page is a record of payment of eleven hundred dollars on Oct 31st, 1859. Printed by Herald Print, S.F. Some age toning and chipping at folds, rough edges. Little York was located two miles Southwest of Dutch Flat and about 9 miles Southeast of Nevada City. Active since 1849, the town was organized in 1852 when most of the miners that were there were from New York chose the name over St. Louis. Active lode and hydraulic mining continued in the area till 1884 when the outlawing of hydraulic mining forced closure of operations. The post office closed in 1886. (Ref. Gudde – Gold Camps, p.196.) The company was capitalized at $20,000; 200 shares at $100 each. Duration of charter, 50 years. According to the History of Placer & Nevada Counties (1924), the Little York Mine was located on the ridge dividing Bear River from Steep Hollow, at an elevation of 600 ft. above the river.
