Certificate No. 177 from the York Mining Company in Little York, Nevada County, California. Dated May 17, 1852. Signed by Richard Savage, President and John Chapman, Secretary. Little York was located two miles Southwest of Dutch Flat and about 9 miles southeast of Nevada City. Active since 1849, the town was organized in 1852. Active lode and hydraulic mining continued in the area until 1884 when hydraulic mining was outlawed. This certificate is printed on one fourth of a sheet in the form of a four-page letter sheet. Writing below the certificate documents that it was transferred to N. Weaver? on November 13, 1852, and then to Joseph Gardiner? on October 9, 1853. Black on blue, printed by Herald Print, San Francisco. A very rare early mining certificate. Some spots on the bottom half, otherwise good condition.
