York Mining Company stock certificate No. 132(?), incorporated April 27 1852, issued to Pleasant Routon(?) for 1 share ($200 per share) on May 18, 1852 for the Little York, Nevada County. 2 sheets. Blue paper, folded, with multiple transfer instructions. Herald Printer, San Francisco.

This certificate comes from the early days of the California Gold Rush, as Little York was one of the first mining camps established in Nevada County. The first cabins were built in the fall of 1850, and by 1852 - the year of this certificate - the town was incorporated and the population was around 600. The post office wasn't established until 1855. Mining in the area began with placer deposits, with the famous Blue Lead gold bearing channel said to have been "one of the richest auriferous gravel channels in the Sierras". Mining continued in the area and developed with mining technology through the 1890s.
