This is a collection of spectacular black and white collotypes (see below), most likely from photographs taken near the turn of the 20th century in the then newly formed Yosemite National Park (itself established in 1890). There are 29 images glued by their corners onto 24 warm gray, heavy paper pages, laced and bound on the left edge with a thin cotton rope. Each photograph is labeled with the location or point of interest. Images include the early railroad through Merced Canyon, the Yosemite Valley Railroad Depot in El Portal, Upper and Lower Cascade Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Upper Yosemite Falls, The Sentinel, North Dome, Half Dome, some panoramic vistas, and more. The photographer is unknown, but it is unlikely to be Ansel Adams, a famous Yosemite photographer, who got his first camera and photographed in Yosemite as a young teen in 1916. The inside back cover credits The Albertype Company, Brooklyn, NY. The name Albertype originally referred to a form of photographic printing originated by Josef Albert in 1869. Adolph and Herman Witteman used the name for a company they established to produce and distribute souvenir photographic albums in 1890. From then until 1950, Albertype published collotypes printed from photographs of its own agents (including Adolph Witteman), other companies, and independent photographers. The Art Vue Post Card Company purchased Albertype in 1952. A collotype is a photographic print made from a printing plate created by exposing a dichromate-impregnated gelatin to ultraviolet light through a photographic negative. The prints are typically made by hand in a small press. Collotypes were known for their ability to produce highly detailed prints. The process was replaced by less-expensive and faster, but less detailed, offset lithography. State: California City: Yosemite Date: c1900
