Out of the hundreds of Yosemite stereoviews in this collection, these 9 were kept separate by Prag. They were in an envelope marked Very Early Yosemite Watkins. All nine are different, mounted on pink cardstock. None show structures or hotels. The locations are hand noted on the back of each. These are likely early 1860s cards. Views include: Half Dome, Mt. Broderick from S. Fork, El Capitan, Bridal Veil, River View at Noon, North Dome, River View Down the Valley, The Top of the Yo Semite, and View from the South Fork. Light to medium contrast. According to Mautz, Watkins came to California during the Gold Rush began photographing Yosemite in 1861. He became famous when he produced his mammoth plate views. Located in San Jose in 1850s, then San Francisco. Eventually went blind and lost all of his negatives during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Sadly, he died in a mental institution in 1916.
